Many modern toys and electronics, and even wearables such as shoes with flashing lights are powered by button/coin batteries.

These present a hazard, if swallowed. A number of children in Australia and around the world have been seriously injured or killed by ingesting these batteries.

June 2022 saw the ACCC mandate two standards for product containing button/coin batteries.

Products containing button/coin batteries safety standard

This provides test methods and compliance criteria aimed at ensuring that batteries are adequately secured and cannot be accessed by a child.

Products containing button/coin batteries information standard

This specifies how packaging is to alert to potential danger by using international WARNING/CAUTION labels and symbols.

Active point of sale audits are conducted currently and a number of retailers have faced court and heavy fines.
