Textile mesh products are available in a range of weights and constructions and form a vital role in protecting crops from birds, hailstorms, and excessive sunlight. In Horticulture, they are also widely used to provide controlled shading.

Farmers across Australia make significant investments in these materials to safeguard high-value harvests.

Typically manufactured from polypropylene or polyethylene, these textiles must be properly stabilised against ultra-violet (UV) degradation to ensure an adequate service life under harsh outdoor conditions.

Our laboratory provides baseline performance testing to assess the strength and durability of these materials. Standard tests include mesh break load, tensile strength, and burst pressure. Where required, samples can also undergo accelerated weathering to simulate long-term environmental exposure. After this process, the same tests are repeated to evaluate strength loss and overall durability.

AS 4174 – Knitted and Woven Shade Fabrics gives performance requirements for these textiles and a measure for retained strength after UV exposure.
