Wearing the right motorcycle safety gear is essential for protecting yourself and complying with the law in Australia.
At a minimum, motorcyclists must wear an approved helmet, but using protective jackets, pants, gloves, and boots is highly recommended to reduce the severity of injuries. Investing in proper gear ensures a safer, more enjoyable ride, whether you’re commuting through the city or touring Australia’s open roads.
AWTA Product Testing can assist with your requirements for accredited testing and assessment of Hi-Visibility garments to AS 4602.1:2024. As test specifications may differ from garment to garment, listed are a range of assessments that may be required.
High Visibility Fabrics
Each fabric type and colour requires compliance with AS/NZS 1906.4, Section 2. If fabric is used in multiple garments, this only needs to be conducted once per each colour and type.
Fabric chromaticity & luminance and durability Test Code: P027
Assessment against the requirements of AS/NZS 1906.4-2023, Section 2 includes the following:
- Colourfastness to washing
- Colourfastness to acidic perspiration
- Colourfastness to alkaline perspiration
- Chromaticity and Luminance as received
- Chromaticity and Luminance after UV exposure
UPF rating (optional) Test Code: T28A
- Assessment against AS 4399-1996, Appendix A
- Subcontracted testing to ARPANSA laboratories

Retroreflective Materials
Class R retroreflective tape requires compliance with AS/NZS 1906.4, Section 3. Class RF and SP reflective materials require compliance with AS/NZS 1906.4, Section 2 and Section 3. If the tape is used in multiple garments, this only needs to be conducted once per type.
Class R Retroreflective materials Test Code: P025
Class RF & SP Retroreflective materials Test Code: P025 / P027
Assessment against the requirements of AS/NZS 1906.4-2024, Section 3 includes the following:
- Photometric performance
- CIL after UV exposure
- CIL after washing (5 wash/dry cycles)
- CIL after abrasion
- CIL after raised temperature
- CIL under rainfall
- Flex cracking
- Cold cracking
Garment design & labelling Test Code: T28G
- Assessment against the requirements of AS 4602.1:2024
Depending on the garment classification, this assessment will require testing of some / all of the components listed. The table below will provide a guide to testing required for each classification / level.
