AWTA TEST CODE APPLICATION PRINCIPLE
: WIRA CARPET ABRASION
: T57 AND T57M
: :
This test method is applicable to wool and wool blend pile carpets. Circular specimens of carpet are abraded against a specified worsted crossbred or nylon fabric for a measured number of rotations, using an abrasion machine based on the principle of offset heads rotating about parallel axes in the same direction at the same speed. The end point of the test is the number of cycles such that the visual appearance of the specimen is similar to that indicated in a standard set of photographs. An extension of the test method has been to weigh the sample at 5,000 rub intervals to measure the actual pile mass loss.
SAMPLES REQUIRED FOR TESTING INTERPRETATION
:
Approximately 1m2.
:
The actual number of rubs to reach end point is very dependent on the carpet. AWC use this figure to determine a durability factor:
100% Wool D =
19 WIRA + 1.4 ( Surface Pile Mass) 2 1000 * Pile Thickness 4.6 WIRA + 1.9 ( Surface Pile Mass) 2 1000 * Pile Thickness
80% Wool / 20% Nylon D =
The durability figures are used to help grade carpets for the Woolmark Scheme. The actual pile mass loss can also be expressed as pile mass loss per 1000 cycles. SERVICE TARGET COST : : 7 days. See Fee List.
